DPD to launch new app to improve delivery experience

International carrier DPD has announced it will launch a new app in the autumn that will improve the delivery experience for parcel recipients. Using the app, recipients simply create a personal profile with their individual delivery preferences and then they are given access to a range of new services.

“The app works as an inbound portal where you can see all the parcels that are coming your way, so you do not have to track each parcel. You specify your delivery preferences, and the carrier sees where and when you want your parcel to be delivered. If your preferences change, you just tell the carrier via the app, and he will adjust,” explained DPD UK CEO Dwain McDonald.

DPD’s upcoming app is coherent with its delivery service Predict, which was launched in March 2010 in the UK. Predict provides users with a one-hour delivery window and the option of changing delivery preferences up to 15 minutes before the parcel is due to be delivered. According to DPD, the award-winning Predict service has been the reason behind many new partnerships with major retailers.

Steffen Pasgaard, vice president at software company EDI-Soft, believes DPD’s new app will be well received and will entail implications for online shops as well as possibly influencing other carriers to move in the same direction.

The application will promote a dialog between the carrier and the receiver rather than the previous monolog. “Carriers are able to get feedback from the receiver about desired delivery time and place with DPD’s app. This means reduced or completely eliminated delivery problems. It improves the delivery experience for both the recipient and the carrier,” Pasgaard said, adding he believes an increased focus on service, innovation and differentiation in providing delivery services is necessary if online shops and carriers want to adapt to consumers’ future demands.
