PostNL replaces 100 delivery vans in Amsterdam with e-cargo bikes

PostNL is to replace 100 diesel delivery vans with 60 sustainable e-cargo bicycles in Amsterdam, Netherlands, next month.

The expansion of e-bike use follows a successful trial run in the city. PostNL opted for e-cargo bicycles as the company wants to make its transportation greener, and because traffic density in cities is increasing.

E-cargo bicycles are emission-free and trials showed that in the center of Amsterdam, delivery by e-cargo bicycle is sometimes even faster than by delivery van. Eight bike transfer points will be added to the existing network, where mail and parcels can be loaded into the e-cargo bikes.

As of next month, PostNL will also deliver the majority of parcels in the evenings using e-cargo bicycles within the Ring A10 area.

In collaboration with FuturumShop, an online retailer of bicycles and bicycle parts, PostNL has run tests in Amsterdam since February 2017 to see how it can deliver parcels cleanly, quickly and flexibly with the e-cargo bicycle. PostNL’s ambition is to complete deliveries emission-free in 25 city centers by 2025.
